Folkman and Lazarus (1981) have long pointed out the need for developing a comprehensive and general taxonomy of coping without sacificing the richness of specific cognitive and behavioral coping strategies. However, without some consensus regarding a comprehensive taxonomy, progress in both research and applicatioins will remain difficult.

The Ways of Coping Questionnaire (Folkman & Lazarus, 1988) is a 66-item, 4-point scale that measures the extent to which the individual used a particular coping strategy in a stressful situation. It is composed of eight sub-scales namely, confrontative coping, coping strategies (e.g., Ways of Coping Questionnaire; Folkman & Lazarus, 198 8 and the COPE Inventory, Carver et al., 1989). It should be further noted that the MCI until recentl y had onl y been Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ) Rosentiel and Keefe (1983) A 44-item self-report inventory that measures coping strategies of pain patients, composed of (a) 6 cognitive strategies, (b) 2 behavioral strategies, and (c) 2 effectiveness ratings. Items are rated on a 7-point frequency format. Coping Strategies • Diverting attention • mistic coping, such as keeping a sense of humor, report better mental and general health (Cupples, Nolan, Augustine, & Kynoch, 1998). Given such evidence that coping is intimately related to mental and general health status, coping strategies are routinely evaluated in the context of psychosocial pretransplant assessments.

Already in the 1970s, the stress and coping research group of Lazarus developed the Ways of Coping Checklist (WCC) in line with the transactional phenomenological stress theory that suggested two main functions of coping: problem solving and emotion regulation (cf. Lazarus, 1991).
